Why the Zen of Chemistry?

We live in an age where science is becoming more and more a part of everyday life and a quintessential key for solving many of humanity’s global issues. Over the next few decades, the number of skilled scientists required to tackle issues like renewable energy, climate change, medicine and human health, agriculture, and technology is going to increase exponentially. We are committed to inspire and educate our future planet savers.

While the term Zen has several different interpretations originating from different cultures, the interpretation we have chosen for this website is “simplicity”. Chemistry is often considered to be a “complicated” subject that is “only for smart people”; both statements we dismiss. Learning chemistry is like almost any other pursuit – it requires that a teacher be clear and concise when explaining concepts – and it requires patience, practice and dedication from the learner. We honestly believe anyone can learn chemistry with the interest and willingness to spend the time.

Our mission for this website is to present information in a way that makes learning chemistry simple and straightforward.

About our founder, Amelia

Picture
I grew up in Geelong, Australia, and I am now located just 20 minutes down the road in a nearby coastal town. I had a love for science at a very young age, I participated in a number of extra-curricular science programs at high school, and I completed a Bachelor of Forensic Science with first class honours in 2005. Throughout my undergraduate years I was involved in several research projects in the area of forensic science, and I taught undergraduates at the University for four years – lecturing and taking tutorials and practicals. I was also heavily involved in Deakin University’s school outreach program “The Forensic Detective”, as well as other demonstrational and interactive science outreach programs targeted to primary school aged students all the way through to Year 12 IB (International Baccalaureate) students.

I spent two years in the chemical manufacturing industry at two different international companies, however my love for science education has drawn me back to pursue training and education as a full-time career.
